Question When did the last CAP's (Codice di avviamento postale, i.e. Postal Sending Code) modification came into effect? Answer the last CAP's modification came into effect November first 2010, two years after the publication of CAP's directory. Question Has postcode's structure changed? Answer As a matter of fact postcode’s structure has not changed, in fact CAP is still a five-digit code, each digit with a proper meaning in relation to its specific position:
If the third digit is a 0 or an 8, then the 4th and 5th digit have this specific meaning:
If digits is represented by an odd number between 1, 5 and 9, the 4th and the 5th digit have the following meaning:
Question What has changed snce the last CAP's publication? Since October 29th 2010 the Zip Code Directory includes the last Italian administrative changes, such as: » the institution of the three new provinces of Monza and Brianza (MB), Fermo (FM) and Barletta Andria -Trani (BT). » the transfer of the following municipalities Casteldelci, Maiolo, Novafeltria, Pennabilli, San Leo, Sant'Agata Feltria e Talamello from the Pesaro Urbino province to the Rimini province. » the institution of the new municipalities of Ledro and Comano Terme in the province of Trento. Question Why Sardinia's new provinces' CAPs remain the same? Answer Sardinia represents an exception as far as CAP's second and third digit meaning is concerned, which usually indicate the province. Furthermore chief towns differ having as a third digit number 1 or 9, while the new 4 chief towns continue to keep the former provincial CAP (i.e. with 0 as third digit). Nevertheless from an organizational point of view this CAP numbering is still valid, it has been decided not to change it for the time being. This decision implies that parcel's grouping should respect the up-to-now CAP's application, referring to the 4 original provinces. Question Why CAP's database cannot be downloaded free of charge from Internet? Answer Poste Italiane still offers, for free, to customers all the means to find out the exact CAP for all the Italian addresses both on its Internet site and through contact center (freephone 803.160*) or at its post offices. In such a way the company fully guarantees data's publicity. On the contrary the whole database cannot be downloaded, being it only Poste Italiane property. In order to develop and maintain this database Poste Italiane has invested, and is still investing, both in terms of development of adequate software components and in terms of employment of human resources to verify and improve its data handling with the objective of constantly updating toponymical data and the related organizational delivery information according to territory's redefinition. The results of such activities referring to CAP's database development and improvement are offered to customers by a constant updating system regarding both CAP (Codice di avviamento postale, i.e. Postal Sending Code) Professional database and the new CAP Street file. CAP's database is protected according to current provisions in terms of copyright and data protection. As it is common in Europe and in other countries, where as postal operators do not give access to a free consultation of their databasis, Poste Italiane commercializes its toponymical data. Question Is it binding to indicate the CAP in the address? Answer Yes, the CAP is a fundamental address's component and must always be indicated. Question For how long mail with not-updated CAPs will be accepted? Answer Even mail without an updated CAP will be delivered when possible. Poste Italiane is organized to manage through its sorting centers also mail with not-updated postcode that will still be received for a transitory period of at least six months from October 29th 2010, when CAP postcode edition will become effective. Nevertheless the company invites customers to use the new postcodes as soon as possible, because that will make Poste Italiane capable of offering a more accurate and quick delivery service. It must be clear though that, even after the transitory period, as provided by General Conditions of Postal Services, mail with a wrong or incomplete address will still be delivered once identified with certitude, and without any difficulty, the real addressee, otherwise mail will be worked as indicating a non-existent address. Question For how long can a Company send bulk mail labelled with not-updated CAPS? Answer The immediate adoption of new CAPS will significantly contribute to a high level performance of the optical character readers in the sorting centers. It should be noticed that a high level of performance in optical identification is an essential prerequisite to benefit from tariff reduction for standardized bulk mail. Thus Poste Italiane request all Companies to update as soon as possible their mailing lists. Nevertheless, for an at least six-months transitory period, sorting systems are prepared to work mail indicating both old as well as new CAPS. When the new publication of the next edition of postcode's book will occur, expected within a year, old postcodes will not be automatically operative in the sorting systems, thus mail indicating all postcodes will be only manually worked. Hence, starting from that date, postal items, received from those Business customers' (undersigning specific agreements with Poste Italiane), will not be accepted whenever labelled with not-updated postcodes. It is moreover understood that, as provided by General Conditions of the Postal Service, mail identified with a wrong or insufficient address will still be delivered if possible once determined with certitude, and without any difficulty, the real addressee, otherwise mail will be worked as indicating a non-existent address. Question Isn't it possible to use a generic CAP (i.e. 00100 for Rome) in the 41 multi – CAP cities? Answer No! It is not possible to use a generic CAP in no one of the 41 chief towns subdivided in postal zones/areas (i.e. 00100 Roma), it should then be absolutely avoided its use because that will determine delays in mail working process with a consequent strong impact on delivery activities' timing. Question How frequently is CAP updated? Answer CAP is updated following the arising of some peculiar organizational/administratives needs, and in any case in every one year time. Moreover every six months toponymic updatings are published (new streets of the 41 multi-CAP streets, new municipalities, new districts, change on the name of municipalities, districts, street etc). These every-six-months updatings, are available for a free consultation through Poste Italiane contact center and the consultation of Poste Italiane site, and are included in territorial databasis commercialized by Poste Italiane: CAP Professional, CAP Street file, CAP Zone and CAP Delivery Points. torna su
Question Is it necessary to use an MS Access to consult CAP database? Answer No, it is not necessary: CAP's databasis consultation can be carried out on different platforms and it does not imply Microsoft systems availability. CAP databasis are commercialized under MS Access 2000 format, but it is not necessary to buy either MS Windows or MS Access to use it: on the contrary it is possible to buy products from other suppliers or to use products available free of charge. As a matter of fact it is possible to have access to CAP databasis by using any operating system on the market (MS Windows, Linux, Sun Solaris, Mac OS X etc) or by other software products (among them OpenOffice that can be downloaded from Internet for free) or by other different drivers (such as MySQL that can be downloaded without charge from Internet). Answer No, databasis only indicate abbreviations, according to Poste Italiane standard, of the only DUG (Generic Urbanistic Denomination) quoting the streets of the cities respectively indicated. Therefore CAP Professional identifies only the DUGS of the 41 cities subdivided in postal areas, where as CAP Street file identifies only DUGS relating to the 70 cities there listed. DUGS' standard abbreviations are maximum four characters long. For more detailed informations please contact the following e-mail address dataservices@posteitaliane.it Question Does CAP Professional allow to directly extract/point out locations and streets that have changed their CAP? Beyond any CAP changes it will then be possible to identify variations in the denomination of municipalities, districts and streets For more detailed information please contact the following e-mail address dataservices@posteitaliane.it Question How does CAP Professional application work? Is it possible to get its operational workbook? Answer CAP Professional is not an application: it is just a database in MS Access format containing all toponymical data with their relative postcodes for all the Italian locations and for the 41 multi-CAP cities. CAP Professional does not include software tools for data consultation, or addresses' standardization. The processing to update or standardize its own addresses, on the basis of the data included in CAP Professional, are fully in charge of the customer. Technical specifications, together with the database, are supplied to describe in detail database's structure and its accessibility. Agreement's renewal is explicitly regulated according to price list terms. Commercial Development Use: this licence is issued with no time limit for commercial purposes whereas Poste Italiane's database is part of an application (software desktop or on line consultation) that is protected so that it is not possible to transfer or hand over Poste Italiane's database to the final user. The cost applied differs and it is calculated according to the declared number of final customers. The updating can be purchased at list prices on licencee's request within 36 months from the date of the signature of the present Agreement. Once the 36 months deadline period is expired, the licencee must sign a new Agreement. torna su
Question Is it possible to identify on the first address line only the addressee's "denominations" (Dear Sir, Miss, Mrs, Dr.)? Answer Although it is highly recommended to use the first line of the address to indicate personal details (title, name and surname or company title), it is accepted that an address will report the titles on the first line only under the circumstances where the five lines limit is respected (maximum 6 lines for international mail). The following addresses must then considered acceptable:
Question How to write the mailing address of districts not yet published in 2009 edition of CAP's directory? Answer 2009 CAP's directory edition publishes all 8.100 municipalities and districts of main postal interest, this is the reason why some of the districts are not indicated. If mail is addressed to a district published in Poste Italiane database, it is then necessary to indicate in the line of the location: CAP district's name, province's acronym. For example: ASTA FRUTTALTEDO SRL VIA DEL PALAZZINO 19 40051 ALTEDO BO If the district has the very same CAP of the municipality it belongs to it is possible to indicate also municipality's name without any distinction. For example: ASTA FRUTTALTEDO SRL VIA DEL PALAZZINO 19 40051 MALALBERGO BO If the mail is addressed to a district not listed by Poste Italiane, it is necessary to indicate in the line of the location: CAP, name of the municipality it belongs to, province's acronym
Whenever it will be requested to maintain the information about the district, this can be inserted in the line between the addressee and its address without indicating any further qualification's element.
Question How to write a post-office boxes address? Answer For that mail addressed to post-office boxes in the address's line there should be reported the denomination "CASELLA POSTALE" followed by the post-office box (5 digits maximum). Moreover it is necessary to indicate, in one of the optional lines, the name of the post office where the post-box is situated, preceded by the expression "UFFICIO". This information should be indicated in the line just above the address line. Finally in the line indicating the locality it should be reported the specific CAP of the post office where the box is situated and not a generic CAP.
