Poste Italiane is working with specialist digital company sennder GmbH (“sennder”) to establish a joint venture company (“JV”) in Italy focused on improving its long-haul road transportation efficiency as part of its five-year strategic plan Deliver 2022. The JV will initially be majority owned by Poste Italiane.
The creation of a JV operating in Italy in the full truckload[1] segment is part of the Company’s wider commitment to enhance performance and drive innovation within its Mail & Parcel division through a dedicated structural focus on long-haul transportation. Poste Group currently employs around 800 third-party vehicles for long-haul alone, making approximately 2,300 journeys and covering 450,000 Km on an average day.
sennder is a European digital freight forwarder company headquartered in Berlin and one of the most innovative and promising start-ups in the sector, using proprietary technology to organize long-haul transport with an efficient, smart and flexible approach.
The partnership with sennder will also allow Poste Italiane to target transport demand coming from third parties inside and outside of Italy, to further benefit from economies of scale and technology optimization.
Commenting on the announcement, Matteo Del Fante, Poste Italiane Chief Executive Officer and General Manager, said: “The initiative is part of the broader commitment taken with our Joint Delivery Model to modernize our fleet and further optimize our logistic value chain through advanced IT solutions, delivering cost efficiencies as well as reduced CO2 emissions”.
Poste and sennder have signed a letter of intent and will now work on the material set-up of the Joint Venture in the coming months with the target of starting operations in the third quarter of 2019.
