Trial & Testing Experiments and PoCs with startups

Trial Testing There is no innovation without action: this is the mantra that guides us in our experimentation initiatives. We act with the involvement of various startups who propose us their ideas and solutions that create value for Poste Italiane.


Our goal is first to test their solution in a specific environment (ie our “sandbox”) in order to have a technical and economic validation for a faster time to market if we possibly decide for a launch on the market.

A short example of Proof of Concept (PoC) in progress/concluded are shown here below:

  • Status: PoC in progress
  • Scope: Artificial Intelligence to support business growth and enrich CRM data
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Digital, Technology & Operation
  • Expected benefits: Enrich Poste Italiane's CRM with synthetic indices of potential on small economic operators and ecommerce merchants, and improve commercial leads for sales force and commercial channels. The Data Appeal Company can assess prospect client’s business potential based on reviews and feedback on social networks.
  • Tested solution: The Data Appeal Company uses feedback and recommendations, in-depth geolocation data and other open data available on the web to enrich the information of CRM and public DBs with exclusive and highly commercial KPIs. Some KPIs provided are users feedback on the merchant compared to others in the area, product categories sold, current technological, logistics and payment partners.

  • Scope: Work safety and sustainability
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Mailing, Parcels, Logistics / Engineering
  • Expected benefits: Improve the work of Postmen in terms of safety and ecological footprint thanks to technology
  • Tested solution: 221e installed the MUSE multi-sensor platform: wearable sensors positioned on the uniform of postmen and on 2, 3 and 4-wheeled vehicles. Through internally developed sensor fusion algorithms, the following were provided: data relating to emergency requests that are activated automatically; survey data on vibrations generated by the road surface and aggregate indices relating to driving dynamics, thus encouraging safe and eco-sustainable driving
  • Results obtained: Poste Italiane consolidates its role in Open Innovation by acquiring know-how in the field of the IoT (Internet Of Things) in line with the path taken by Digital Transformation which involves the development of innovative solutions, as a support and source for the evolution of business

  • Scope: Artificial Intelligence applied to conversational analysis
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Digital, Technology, Operation / Customer Operations / Customer Support Services
  • Expected benefits: Improve, with the use of artificial intelligence, the quality of the digital assistance service offered to its customers with the "Poste" bot
  • Tested solution: The project was divided into three phases: organizing knowledge of the bot, improving self-learning, increasing the analysis of comments on the quality of service left by customers at the end of the conversation
  • Results obtained: During the first phase, the Indigo.ai study has in perspective shown a 10% increase in the understanding of customer requests. In the second phase, the previously not included requests were automatically qualified and clustered, creating a tool capable of reducing human effort by 70% in the reprocessing of cases not recognized by the bot. In the third phase, customer feedback on the quality of the service was analyzed.

  • Scope: Marketing Automation applied to the Company Welfare Platform

  • Expected benefits: Spending increase on the Poste Mondo Welfare Platform
  • Tested solution: Creation of banners and ebooks on two categories of orders on the Poste Mondo Welfare platform in order to increase the spending of Poste Italiane employees
  • Results obtained: For the two categories of orders object of the PoC, excellent results were recorded both in terms of Click to Rate as well as in Users who purchased after viewing the creatives (banners and ebooks)

  • Scope: Engagement & Gamification
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Human Resources and Organization
  • Expected benefits: Commitment and awareness of Poste Italiane employees on the objectives, values and behaviors of Smart Working
  • Tested solution: Creation of a quiz with a gamification component aimed at testing the knowledge of the Smart Working pillars
  • Results obtained: Increased awareness and greater engagement on the objectives, values ​​and behaviors of Smart Working

  • Scope: Cash dematerialization
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: DTO Rapid Prototyping e Postepay
  • Expected benefits: New use cases for Postepay in order to increase the average stock, the number of transactions and the value transacted on Postepay cards
  • Tested solution: Possibility of reloading Postepay cards by inserting all coin denominations (from € 0.01 to € 2) in the Centy totem which in real time counts the coins and credits the amount. The Centy totem has been enabled for the Postepay recharges network from third parties
  • Results obtained: Increase of average number of transactions and average Postepay card stock

  • Scope: Multi-Factor Authentication MFA
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Cyber Security
  • Expected benefits: New digital, biometric, encrypted identity and authentication mode in distributed architecture, multi-factor and multi-modal.
  • Tested solution: Keyless privacy-preserving biometric technology for passwordless MFA authentication on the eLearning platform, validating the effectiveness, user experience and security of the MFA system
  • Results obtained: User experience increase during login, simple and fast, without requiring a password with security guaranteed by the facial recognition of the encrypted user
  • Status: PoC in progress
  • Scope: Organizational and cultural transformation through the improvement of team behavior
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: HR - Sviluppo, Change Management & Digital HR
  • Expected benefits: Improve interactions between colleagues and collaborators from different business areas involved in cross-functional, hierarchical, geographically distributed, hybrid in presence and remote teams, enhancing individual contributions and sharing values such as loyalty and transparency on mutual relationships of people.
  • Tested solution: Cloud platform that allows, based on specific KPIs, the mapping of strengths and areas for improvement of the teams involved, with access to an Academy to increase less developed skylls.

  • Scope: Platform with Artificial Intelligence to support commercial campaigns
  • Sponsor Business Unit/ Group Company: Business Market and Public Administration / Planning and Commercial Support
  • Expected benefits: Support the Marketing, Sales, CRM and Teleselling departments in achieving their sales objectives; segmenting actual and prospect customers, identifying the clusters with the highest purchase potential.
  • Tested solution: Platform installed on Poste HD to profile small medium business customers in order to prioritize the lists of campaigns assigned to the sales force based on the propensity to buy.
